It is not costly to expose your open fire. Advice from your local chimney sweep will go a long way to save you pounds and get you started fairly quickly. After a good sweep, we were advised to invest in fire bricks necessary to surround the inside of the wall. These set you back less than thirty pounds and are supplied at local hardware stores. The hardware store near Westgate in Launceston had all shapes and sizes of bricks. It was like connecting Lego bricks to create the perfect 'fire-like' shape for our grate in order for it to fit into the fireplace wall. Some houses harbour vast open hooded fires, so a large all-round grate will suffice. A little nook of a fireplace can be catered for too, with a tiny grate, ash pan and grill (to stop the coal from falling out!
